SALZBURG / MUNICH / STUTTGART The ALPINE Construction Company is involved in the German Railroad’s large-scale Stuttgart 21 project. Deutsche Bahn awarded the contract to build the Bad Cannstatt Tunnel [...]

SALZBURG / MUNICH / STUTTGART The ALPINE Construction Company is involved in the German Railroad’s large-scale Stuttgart 21 project. Deutsche Bahn awarded the contract to build the Bad Cannstatt Tunnel to ALPINE and its partners, Hochtief and Wayss & Freytag, who will complete the project by 2018. The contract has a value of approx. 290 million euros. “ALPINE was able to secure another tunnel project for a major client, Deutsche Bahn. The Bad Cannstatt Tunnel makes the sixth railroad tunnel ALPINE is building simultaneously for DB,“ said Josef Arnold, managing director of ALPINE BeMo Tunneling.

The Stuttgart 21 project
The Stuttgart – Ulm railroad project comprises the Stuttgart 21 section and the new Wendlingen – Ulm line. The construction project is the largest enlargement of the public railroad system in Baden-Württemberg since the 19th century. The new Stuttgart–Ulm line will be part of the European high-speed “Magistrale for Europe“ net, linking cities and regions with a total of 34 inhabitants and 16 million employees in five states. Karlsruhe, Stuttgart and Ulm are centrally located along the 1,500 km railroad line connecting the European cities of Paris, Strasbourg, Munich and Vienna with Bratislava and Budapest. As the main east/west axis, the Magistrale will be the backbone of the Trans-European railroad network. The extension of the Magistrale is an important prerequisite for a rapid economic, political and cultural coalescence between Western and Eastern Europe.

16 Tunnel for the Stuttgart-Ulm railroad project
About half of the 117 kilometers of the new railroad line will lead through 16 tunnels. The tunnels are the mainstay of the entire railway project: in the future trains will travel underground in the Stuttgart city center.

ALPINE builds around the world
The Austrian ALPINE Construction Company is a member of the FCC Group and has built roads, motorways, power plants, stadiums, railways and subways, bridges, residential, commercial and industrial buildings around the world. Together with its subsidiary, ALPINE-ENERGIE, it promotes the construction and development of sustainable, alternative energies and energy networks. ALPINE has over 15,000 employees. Approximately half of the revenue from construction services of approx. 3.5 billion euros per year is generated in Austria’s domestic market.

The FCC conglomerate with its head office in Madrid operates in the public services, environmental services, infrastructure and renewable energies sector on an international scale. FCC has over 90,000 employees in more than 50 countries. Last year its sales were in excess of 12 billion euros with a profit of over 300 million euros.

Eching In a consortium together with Plauen Stahl Technologie GmbH, ALPINE Bau Deutschland AG has been awarded the contract for demolition and reconstruction of the Lauter Valley Bridge (Lautertalbrücke). This major bridge is located between the Kaiserslautern-West junction and the Kaiserslautern motorway intersection. The order value is approximately 32 million euros.

The consortium has therefore secured its second contract on this section of motorway. Only 500 m away from the Lauter Valley Bridge, the consortium is currently building the new Waschmühltal bridge.

Lauter Valley Bridge
During the course of widening the A6 autobahn to 6 lanes between the Kaiserslautern-West junction and the Kaiserslautern motorway intersection, the present Lauter Valley Bridge will be completely dismantled and replaced with a new bridge. The existing bridge will be completely deconstructed down to the foundation structures, which will be left in the ground. Two separate structural sections will be built, one for each carriageway. These two 5-span composite steel sections bridge the Lauterbach valley with a length of 275 metres. At its highest point, the bridge passes approximately 25 metres over the valley floor.

Success in bridge construction
Other large-scale projects, such as the new Waschmühltal bridge and the approx. 2.7 km long Unstruttal bridge between Erfurt and Leipzig/Halle, will be completed in 2012 and are prime examples of ALPINE’s expertise in bridge construction and civil engineering.

BAKU, AZERBAIJAN Yesterday the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced that the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest would be broadcast from the “Baku Crystal Hall”. The multipurpose hall is being built in Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital, by the ALPINE Bau Deutschland AG. Three different venues were in the running to host the event. This year’s organizer, Azerbaijan’s public television company, Ictimai TV, recommended the Baku Crystal Hall to EBU as the best location for the 2012 Song Contest.

The spectacular Baku Crystal Hall is being built on National Flag Square and will be a new landmark in Baku’s port. The hall constructed by ALPINE will allow 16,000 spectators to watch the 2012 Song Contest live on each of three days. Another 100 million viewers around the world are expected to watch the event on television to see which performers from among the 43 participating nations win the contest.

ALPINE started building the multipurpose hall last August. ALPINE is the main contractor responsible for planning and building the Baku Crystal Hall. The hall will have a capacity of up to 25,000 spectators. Currently 500 members of staff are working on Baku’s most famous construction site to ensure the project’s timely completion.

SALZBURG/COCHEM: Thousands of trains have rolled through the Kaiser Wilhelm Tunnel between Cochem and Ediger-Eller since its commissioning in 1877. The ALPINE Construction Company has been building the “New Kaiser Wilhelm Tunnel” for Deutsche Bahn AG parallel to the existing tunnel since the end of 2009. The tunneling boring machine, whose drill head has a diameter of 10.12 meters, is digging through arenaceous, argillaceous and loose rock at a top speed of 20 meters per day. The tunnel drill cut through the last 4.183 meters, reaching its goal in the historic city center of Cochem today.

New Kaiser Wilhelm Tunnel meets the latest safety requirements
The new, single-track Kaiser Wilhelm Tunnel is located on the railway line between Koblenz and Perl in Rhineland-Palatinate. The new tunnel meets the latest safety standards. The new tunnel tube will be connected to the old tunnel tube by eight 15-meter accessible cross passages. The project has a contract value of about 80 million euros. A total of 67,000 cubic meters of concrete were used to line the tunnel walls with reinforced concrete tubbing, for the tunnel floor and for the construction of the two tunnel portals and eight cross drifts. The 360,000 cubic meters of excavated material was removed by rail in an environmentally friendly way. The first trains are scheduled to run through the new tunnel at the end of 2012. Afterwards the old Kaiser Wilhelm Tunnel will be rehabilitated.

Eching/Mühldorf: After one-and-a-half years construction time, the new bridge over the River Inn at Mühldorf was opened on 26 September 2011 in the presence of Federal Transport Minister, Dr. Peter Ramsauer, Minister of State and head of the State Chancellery, Dr. Marcel Huber, Chief Executive of the District of Mühldorf, Georg Huber, as well as the representative of Deutsche Bahn in the Free State of Bavaria, Klaus-Dieter Josel, and the head of infrastructure of Südostbayernbahn, Christian Kubasch.

The Structure
The more than 100-year old, single track bridge was replaced by a new, twin track structure adjacent to the old bridge. A total of 800 metres of new track and 900 tonnes of steel were used to build the 160-metre long and 12-metre high bridge.

ALPINE started work in April 2010 by installing the bridge foundations, i.e. the foundations and the bored piles were installed. Once the riverbed pier had been installed, the prestressed concrete superstructure followed in February this year. The final gap was bridged this summer. The final step was the completion of the superstructure works (tracks, sleepers, ballast). The first train rolled down the track at 3 am on 4 October.

Eching/Warsaw: ALPINE won the assignment to act as general contractor and to build and finish the Renaissance Hotel at Warsaw’s Chopin airport.

The hotel was constructed on an existing car park in the immediate vicinity of Terminal T-2. The value of the contract is around 32 million Euro. Poland is an interesting and important market for ALPINE. The contract was won thanks to the company’s expertise and underlines its growing presence on the Polish market.

The hotel
The hotel will have around 16,750 square meters of floor space and a total of 225 rooms. It will have a swimming pool as well as a fitness and wellness area alongside its restaurants and five conference rooms. The firm of architects, JEMS ARCHITEKCI Sp. z o.o., designed the eight-storey building.
